Henri Charrière, aka « Papillon », is an old slave, born on november 16 1906 in Ardèche and died on July 29 1973 in Madrid in Spain. He is well known célèbre by his book partially autobiographical “Papillon”, wrote in 1969.

His story was equally the subject of a cinematographic adaptation in 1973 under the title PAPILLON. His character was interpreted by Steve Mc Queen who played the Slave’s role alongside Dustin Hoffman (Louis Dega).

In october 1917, the young Henri’s fate will toggle. His mother died in Lanas of a contagious disease dept indochinese injured.

Too much linked to his mother, too young without a doubt to support this kind of event, he will react to this tragedy by the uprising without anyone’s has got over him nor to canalize his violence.

His youth will be hard and disrupt.

Resident in upper boy school in Crest, Drôme county, he will be fired from this institute in 1925 following a too much violent fight.

In order to avoid legal proceedings and to suppress the rebellious temperament, his father gave him sign the same year a commitment in the Navy.

After a few difficult debuts in Toulon, he is affected on august 1926 in disciplinary batallions on Corse island, first in Calvi before being transfered in an harder unity on Corte.
It’s in Calvi that he will be tatooed, an evening of depression, a beautiful butterfly on his chest, symbol of freedom for all soldiers and convicts from the time.

To flee this hell, he takes the opportunity to get his left-hand thumb crushed.

He is reformed on april 28th 1927 and return in Ardèche since next month.
If this one who had left the Drôme county two years earlier was a complex young, unruly and a bit rogue, this one who returns in Ardèche in May 1927 and who becomes now known as « Papillon » is a thug, hardened to trials and strokes, great fighter.

He imposes himself quickly as the chief of a little thug squad which rages on little dancing coffee for fun. Pitched battles, settling of scores, first larcenies.

Papillon, who excels on rugby fields de rugby and in dance contest, spends also increasingly time to stun himself in Lauzière’s party, charming little brothel in Vals les bains.
His pronced taste for the night, parties and pretty women, his advantageous physic, his undeniable talent to seduce, allow him to be in comfort in the field.

First consumer, then more or less involved as bouncer, he cut progressively his teeth as a pimp in this thermal city.

Henri passes competitions to integrate administration only to please to his father, who is obviously not abreast of his son’s activities.

Competitions which he brilliantly achieves, but which not allow him to become an officer, convicted as a result by one of the busiest military case !

Extremely disappointed, harvested against the society which refuse to integrate himself, he decides then to leave from Ardèche to join Paris.

Henri Charrière arive in Paris in the end of 1927’s.
Thanks to old comrads known in les disciplinary batallions of Corsica, he setlles in Montmartre and Pigalle’s neighbourhood.
Officially barista, he lives in a first time thanks to a 6-month back pay from his invalidity pension, and to some economies realized in Ardèche before he leaved.

He will live in Paris a life he already experienced in Vals les bains, a young thug in break life, if it is not that his new hunting and play ground is much broader, infinitely more dangerous.

During two years, his daily is one of a young provincial who tries to make his way in Paris’ middle. He plays assiduously in some running dens for gambling and on racetracks, perpetrates some thefts and burglaries, frequents the pimping middle.

If he is not a known pimp and if he doesn’t participle to what we called at that time « white slavery», his daily is after all inproved during some months by his new girlfriend’s incomes, Georgette Fourel aka Nénette, pretty young girl of 18 years old native of Haute-Marne. But Papillon, here as in Vals les bains, is not only a thug. He remains also a good buddy, the kind of comrad you see when you are for joyrides in Paris. In fact, nothing but him knows welcome as well as him, to prepare some parties we remind a long time.

If he is considered by a man from the middle by all brave peoples, the middle find him both too much well-manered and too much fanciful to integrate him really in its world. In fact, Papillon assertive increasingly in what he really is, a unique character, colored, complex, multifaceted : a day butterfly, a night butterfly…

And this life could durer continue a long time, if his fate doesn’t toggle on this early 1930.

In fact, he is suspected by cops services of an other young thug mureder, Roland Legrand. This-one, injured with a bullet from a revolver in the belly on march 26 1930 on the “boulevard de Clichy”, died next-day in the Lariboisière hospital.
Before he died, he will confide to his mother and to police services to have been injured by a certain « Papillon Roger ».
An investigation begins, looking for « Papillon Roger ».

« Papillons », there are a lot in that neighbourhoods …

But not a lot of Papillon Roger.

Because of he has leaved his home hastily, the police will quickly shift towards an other Papillon. Henri Charrière, nicknamed Papillon pouce-coupé ou Papillon l’Avignonnais.

The investigation will last more than a year.

Thanks to the testimony of a lonely witness and to some rumours, Henri Charrière is devant deemed on july 27 1931.

Because he claims with determination his innocence, but also because there are no proofs, no murder weapon, a case particularly empty, the general advocate requires further informations, and reports the criminal trial after judicial vacations, on october.
Henri Charrière begins feeling the freedom wind, and his attorney ensure him he will be free for festive season sera.

The new trial took place on october 26 1931.

It’s the same case, but this time, all is different.

The atmosphere is this time, more tougher.
Judges get bored by this case, whereas it is only a simple score-settling between two guys from the middle.
The only witness will be a bit more persuasive, a bit more convincing.
Henri Charrière, who sense a change in the wind, has a bad fend off, offence often la the court or the jurors.
After deliberation, those who convict him to lifelong penal servitude à perpétuité for intentional unpremeditated homicide, but with mitigating circumstances.

Henri Charrière is collapsed. He don’t understand this sentence.
